Patient and Service Mapping Work Programme
Patient and service mapping is an approach which is used to get a better understanding of how patients diagnosed with cancer move through various health services and to look at ways to improve services and patients' experience of the journey.
The New Zealand Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan 2005 and 2010 identified patient and service mapping as a mechanism to improve the patient's cancer journey.
Patient and Service Mapping Involves:
- Capturing and understanding the patient's whole cancer journey
- establishing what, how and where services are provided
- identifying key issues for patients and service providers
- identifying gaps and bottlenecks in service delivery
- measuring system performance
- identifying opportunities for service improvement and improved outcomes for patients and whānau
It is the expectation that patient and service mapping will be carried out for all of the major tumour groups.
