Tumour Specific Work Groups
Midland
Development of national tumour standards
The Ministry of Health is funding the establishment of eight tumour stream working groups for one year to develop tumour specific standards.
Tumour specific standards:
· ensure patients receive timely and good quality care throughout their cancer journey and the same standard of care regardless of where they live
· enable the development of efficient and sustainable best practice management
· promote a nationally coordinated and consistent approach to service provision.
Timed standards are needed to guide service provision as DHBs work to implement the Faster Cancer Treatment wait time indicators. Faster cancer treatment indicators are a new developmental measure that takes a patient pathway approach across both surgical and non-surgical cancer treatment with a focus on patients getting faster access to assessment, diagnostic and treatment services from the time their cancer diagnosis is suspected and they are referred to secondary care.
The four regional cancer networks have been assigned to provide support to the clinical work groups developing the standards.
The tumour specific standards are expected to be consistent with the Standards for Service Provision for Lung Cancer Patients in
Timeframe for completion of tumour-specific standards: 30 June 2013.
